Abstract
A method of measuring the weight of an aircraft is disclosed. The method comprises, in a self-propelled aircraft undercarriage having a electrical rotating machine, the steps of: measuring the current and voltage going into the rotating machine using current and voltage measuring means, calculating the power into the rotating machine, measuring the speed (or torque or acceleration) of said machine using speed sensing means, and comparing the power and speed (or torque or acceleration) results with a database of power and speed relationships of comparable aircraft of varying weights.

Patent 8,505,308 - Integrated direct drive starter/generator for turbines


Abstract
A starter/generator machine for a turbine with a turbine enclosure, an air duct, and a plurality of fan blades is provided. The starter/generator machine includes a plurality of stator elements spaced at intervals in a ring shape adjacent to the air duct and a plurality of rotor elements mounted on the fan blades. The stator elements and the rotor elements are mounted to interact magnetically to exert a force sufficient to move the rotor elements. The stator elements are shaped to minimize air flow interference and are formed with a core, at least one pole, and multiple windings. The spacing between the stator elements and the rotor elements forms an air gap on the order of 5-10 mm, and the number of stator elements is different from the number of rotor elements.

Patent 8,299,673 - Aspects of winding symmetry in HPO motor design


Abstract
A high phase order induction machine wound and permitted by coil symmetry to operate at fewer than the magnetically optimal number of poles is constrained by symmetry to be a two pole machine and be capable of operating on odd harmonics only, but with back-iron, end rings, and rotor core optimized for 10 pole operation, might be used normally in `5th harmonic` mode, with `7th harmonic` utilized to engage the `mesh effect`. Such a machine thus appears to be operating in the `1.4 harmonic`. A high phase order induction machine driven by a second harmonic drive, in which a symmetry imposed by full span windings is broken. This may be most simply accomplished through the use of short pitch windings. Other possible approaches include using non-wound slot drive, and using toroidal windings which localize coils to individual slots.

Patent 8,258,665 - Motor winding


Abstract
The present invention is an electrical rotating apparatus comprising stator coils wound around the inside and outside of the stator. In a further embodiment, the machine contains a high number of phases, greater than three. In a further embodiment, the phases are connected in a mesh connection. In a further embodiment, each half-phase is independently driven to enable second harmonic drive for an impedance effect. Improvements are apparent in efficiency and packing density.

Patent 8,240,599 - Apparatus for controlling aircraft ground movement


Abstract
An apparatus for controlling the movement of an aircraft having a self-propelled nosewheel, on the ground, is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a control arm; a control unit; means for transmitting information to said self-propelled nosewheel; means for receiving information at said self-propelled nosewheel; and means for controlling at least one of the speed and direction of said nosewheel; whereby airport ground staff can intuitively control the movements of said aircraft by holding said arm and moving it in the direction of required movement of said aircraft.

Abstract
The invention disclosed is a self-propelled aircraft undercarriage for driving an aircraft on the ground, comprising: an axle; a strut supporting said axle; at least one wheel rotatably mounted on said axle; and drive means for driving said at least one wheel; characterized in that said drive means is disk shaped and is external to said wheel. In one embodiment of the invention, said drive means is mounted on said axle between said strut and said wheel. In a second embodiment, said drive means is mounted on said axle, on the side of said wheel furthest from said strut.

Patent 8,186,038 - Method for building a component of an electrical rotating machine


Abstract
A method for building a component for an electrical rotating machine is provided. The method includes providing a powdered magnetic material and an electrically conductive material, positioning these materials within a mold selected to produce the required dimensions in the materials after the application of a hot isostatic pressing (HIP) procedure, and applying at least one HIP procedure to the materials in the mold. Temperatures and pressures of the process are chosen to ensure that the electrically conducting and magnetic portions of the component are bonded without the materials seeping into each other. The method may be employed to build small compact motor systems using motor components formed as described to produce uniform grain structure and consistent magnetic and structural properties in the motor components that are useful in vehicle drive wheels.

Abstract
A self-propelled aircraft undercarriage is disclosed, comprising: an axle; a strut supporting said axle; at least one wheel rotatably mounted on said axle; a pneumatic tire mounted on said wheel; a valve stem connected to said tire for enabling measurement of the pressure of said tire; and drive means for driving said at least one wheel, mounted externally to said wheel; characterized in that the shape of said drive means accommodates said valve stem. Said undercarriage may be any aircraft undercarriage and specifically may be a nosewheel or main landing gear of an aircraft.

Patent 8,146,369 - Integrated direct drive starter/generator for turbines


Abstract
A starter/generator machine for a turbine with a turbine enclosure, an air duct, and a plurality of fan blades is provided. Abstract
A system for minimizing damage on collision to a vehicle having at least one self-propelled wheel is disclosed. The system comprises a motor in a wheel of said vehicle which drives the vehicle, means for measuring the speed of said wheel, means for measuring the torque of said motor, means for monitoring the ratio of the torque of the motor to the speed of the wheel, and means for stopping said motor when torque:speed ratio exceeds an acceptable value.

Abstract
An apparatus for driving a taxiing aircraft is disclosed, comprising, in an aircraft, two self-propelled nosewheels, each having an electric motor; equipment for flight; dual-function controlling means for controlling said equipment for flight and said nosewheels, said dual-function controlling means being disposed in the cockpit of said aircraft; sensing means; and switching means, --wherein said switching means are operable to switch the function of said dual-function controlling means between controlling said equipment for flight and controlling said nosewheels. Patent 7,891,609 - Turnaround methods


Abstract
A method for reducing the turnaround time of an aircraft having at least one self-propelled undercarriage wheel comprising the step of: moving the aircraft to a required location using at least one self-propelled undercarriage wheel; wherein thrust equipment, (e.g. turbines) are turned on only when needed for takeoff or prior to landing, and are turned off until takeoff or after landing; whereby departing equipment, arriving equipment, and turnaround equipment are not at risk from operating thrust equipment, (e.g. turbines). An apparatus for reducing the turnaround time of an aircraft is disclosed comprising a control unit for facilitating voice communication between a pilot and ground staff. Said control unit may further comprise a control arm for inputting the required direction of movement of said nosewheel; means for transmitting direction information to said self-propelled nosewheel; means for receiving direction information at said self-propelled nosewheel; and means for controlling the direction of said nosewheel. The control unit may also comprise means for turning on and off an APU, parking brakes, and other aircraft features.

Patent 7,852,037 - Induction and switched reluctance motor


Abstract
This application describes a motor designed to operate as a reluctance machine at low speeds and as an induction machine at high speeds. The drive waveform is composed of one or more harmonics to be used to match the reluctance pattern of the stator-rotor, causing the rotor to rotate due to the reluctance effect, and one or more other harmonics to induce current in the rotor, causing the rotor to rotate due to the induction effect and the subsequent interaction of the stator and rotor magnetic fields. The two effects are generally not applied simultaneously.

Field of Invention:
The present invention relates to self-propelled nosewheel motors in particular to the control thereof.
Disclosure of Invention:
It can be seen from the forgoing that it would be advantageous to be able to drive an aircraft on the ground using cockpit controls. It would be further advantageous to be able to drive an aircraft on the ground using controls on the ground within an airport, and to be able to transfer control between controllers.
The present invention is a nosewheel control apparatus between an operator and an aircraft, whereby a motorized aircraft wheel or wheels may be controlled during taxi.

Patent 7,469,858 - Geared wheel motor design


Abstract
The present invention is a compound planetary gear system which has a moveable sun gear and a lockable sun gear to change the gear ratio between a high gear ratio and a pseudo 1:1 slipping ratio. The system makes use of a ratchet and pawl mechanism to provide a safety backup for when the lockable sun gear is locked. The invention may be used to move the aircraft from a stationary position, for taxiing, and for pre-rotating the wheels prior to landing.

Patent 7,464,549 - Polyphase hydraulic drive system


Abstract
The present invention comprises an input drive system, which provides a plurality of phases of oscillating fluid flow, and an output drive system connected directly to the input drive system that is powered by the plurality of phases of oscillating fluid flow. The input drive system comprises a plurality of pistons that are caused to move in a reciprocating fashion by a power source. The power source may be a rotating power source, such as that provided by an electric motor, a diesel or petrol engine, or a turbine system. The input drive system comprises a cam ring attached to a rotating power source; a plurality of cam rollers in contact with the cam ring; and a plurality of pistons attached to the cam rings. The output drive system comprises one or more pistons that are caused to move in a reciprocating fashion by the oscillating fluid flow provided by the input drive system. The output drive system comprises a cam ring attached to a load; a plurality of cam rollers in contact with the cam ring; and a plurality of pistons attached to the cam rings

Patent 7,375,483 - Mesh connected brake array for electrical rotating machines


Abstract
In the present invention, several polyphase devices are connected together: an inverter, and electrical rotating machine, and a resistive load or braking resistor. The purpose of the resistive load is to dissipate excess electrical power which may be produced when the inverter acts to slow down the rotating machine, causing the rotating machine to act as a generator. In common art, this resistive load is a single DC resistor coupled to the DC link of the inverter via a separate resistor control transistor. In the present invention, the resistive load is a mesh connected array of resistors, and is electrically connected to the same inverter output terminals that the rotating machine is connected to. When it is desired that the resistors absorb energy, for example from a braking operation, then the harmonic content of the inverter output is adjusted, thus placing voltage differences across the resistor array and causing current to flow in the resistors.

Patent 7,327,105 - Mesh connected electrical rotating machine with span changing


Abstract
An electrical rotating apparatus is provided that has variable impedance. This is achieved by connecting one of the polyphase components of the apparatus in a mesh connection. The spanning value, L, of such a mesh connection may be varied by changing the harmonic content supplied by an inverter component. Also provided is a method for connecting an inverter to a motor, wherein a switching arrangement permits the simple alteration between various mesh connections of different span value, changing thereby the Volts/Hertz ratio of the motor.

Patent 7,126,298 - Mesh connected brake array for electrical rotating machines


Abstract
In the present invention, several polyphase devices are connected together: an inverter (420), and electrical rotating machine (440), and a resistive load or braking resistor (430). The purpose of the resistive load is to dissipate excess electrical which may be produced when the inverter acts to slow down the rotating machine (440), causing the rotating machine to act as a generator. Patent 7,105,938 - Electronically controlled engine generator set


Abstract
An electronically controlled electrical power generator comprises a generator driven by a heat engine, operated by control means, and carrying an electrical load. Operation of the heat engine is at wide open throttle. Control over engine operation and electrical output of the generator is achieved by electronically manipulating the electric load, and/or adjusting excitation levels at the generator's magnetic fields, so as to change engine/generator equilibrium speed. In a beneficial embodiment, the generator is powered by an energy storage unit, to temporarily act as a motor and rotate the engine when starting, and during power absorbing strokes.

Patent 7,075,265 - High phase order electrical rotating machine with distributed windings


Abstract
A rotating induction machine, containing five or more different phases, having windings distributed according to a sinc function with a cutoff frequency allowing low-order spatial harmonics but preventing higher order spatial harmonics from flowing. In a preferred embodiment, the machine is connected to drive means capable of injecting third harmonic into the machine. In a further preferred embodiment, the windings are connected to the drive means with a mesh connection and the machine has five phases.

Patent 6,922,037 - Rotating induction apparatus


Abstract
An electrical rotating apparatus comprises an inverter system that outputs more than three phases. The apparatus further includes a stator electrically coupled to the inverter system, and a rotor electromagnetically coupled to a magnetic field generated by the stator. A signal generator generates a pulse modulated drive waveform signal, that has a frequency synchronized with the rotational frequency of the rotor, and the pulse modulated drive waveform signal drives the inverter system. The pulse modulated drive waveform signal has a pulsing frequency. Additionally, the inverter system may be fed by a pulse modulated drive waveform signal that is fed through at least one signal delay device. Alternatively, the system may also be fed selected harmonic components, such as the third harmonic, up until the number of phases in the apparatus.

Patent 6,864,661 - Rotating induction apparatus


Abstract
An electrical rotating apparatus comprises an inverter system that outputs more than three phases. The apparatus further includes a stator comprising a plurality of slots and full span concentrated windings, with the windings being electrically coupled to the inverter system, and a rotor electromagnetically coupled to a magnetic field generated by the stator. A signal generator generates a drive waveform signal, that has a fundamental frequency, and the drive waveform signal drives the inverter system. The drive waveform signal has a pulsing frequency and is in fixed phase relation to the fundamental frequency. Additionally, the inverter system may be fed by a drive waveform signal that is fed through at least one signal delay device.

Abstract
The present invention comprises an input drive system, which provides a plurality of phases of oscillating fluid flow, and an output drive system connected directly to the input drive system that is powered by the plurality of phases of oscillating fluid flow. Patent 6,831,430 - High Phase Order Motor with Mesh Connected Windings


Abstract
A high phase order induction machine drive system is disclosed. This has an inverter system for the synthesis of a plurality of phases of alternating current output, and a N-phase induction motor (N is greater than 3). The inverter system has N terminals, numbered from 1 to N. Each motor phase is electrically connected to a pair of inverter terminals. One connection is made to a first inverter terminal and the other connection is made to a second inverter terminal. The number of inverter terminals (in order of electrical phase angle) between the first terminal and the second terminal is S+1, where S is the skip number). The phase angle difference between the pair of inverter terminals to which each motor phase is connected is identical for each motor phase.

Patent 6657334 - High Phase Order Motor with Mesh Connected Windings


Abstract
A high phase order induction machine drive system is disclosed. This has an inverter system for the synthesis of a plurality of phases of alternating current output, and a N-phase induction motor (N is greater than 3). The motor is connected to the inverter terminals so that each motor phase is electrically connected to a first inverter terminal and a second inverter terminal S+1 inverter terminals distant from the first inverter terminal in order of electrical phase angle (S is the skip number). The phase angle difference between the pair of inverter terminals to which each motor phase is connected is identical for each motor phase.

Patent 6,570,361 - Rotating induction apparatus


Abstract:

An electrical rotating machine comprises an inverter drive system wherein alternating current comprising more than three phases is produced from the inverter drive system.  The machine further includes a stator comprising a plurality of slots and windings, wherein the windings are electrically coupled to the inverter drive system and a winding chording factor of the stator is approximately 1.   Further, a winding distribution factor of the stator could also be approximately 1.  A rotor in the machine is electromagnetically coupled to a rotating magnetic field generated by the windings and the rotating magnetic field has a flux density level that exhibits saturation effects.

Patent 6348775 - Drive wave form synchronization for induction motors


Abstract
A polyphase induction motor is operated by an inverter drive system comprising a logic level controller.  A number, preferably twelve or more, of independently driven phases causes harmonic fields, up to a number equal to the number of phases, to oscillate in synchrony with the fundamental oscillating field.  A pulse-width modulation (“PWM”) carrier is used by the logic level controller to synthesize a desired drive alternating current, in which the pulsing distortion produced by the pulse width modulation produces a synchronous oscillating field in the driven polyphase induction motor.

Patent 6252324 - Method of winding a rotating induction apparatus


Abstract
A method of winding an electrical rotating apparatus includes determining a desired number of phases that is output from an electrical rotating apparatus, with the number of phases being greater than three.  A stator is provided and additionally, a rotor is provided such that the rotor is electromagnetically coupled to a magnetic field generated by the stator.  A plurality of coils is also provided, with the plurality of coils including a first coil and a second coil.  The plurality of coils are wound around the stator, with the first coil being placed on the right side of the stator and the second coil being placed on the left side of the stator.

Patent 6198238 - High phase order cycloconverting generator and drive means


Abstract
An electrical generator, consisting of a high phase order generator and a high phase order cycloconverter.  Output from said cycloconverter may be high phase order, three phase, single phase, or direct current.  Output from said cycloconverter may be of arbitrary frequency, voltage, and phase.  Power electronic components are smaller and more efficiently used.  Slower and therefor less expensive devices may be beneficially used.  Variable speed resources may be used without the use of a DC to DC converter, enhancing power production efficiency.  In a beneficial embodiment of the present invention, said cycloconverter is used to provide power directly to a high phase order motor, whereby diesel electric drive means may be constructed to higher specific power and higher efficiency.

Patent 6054837 - POLYPHASE INDUCTION ELECTRICAL ROTATING MACHINE


Abstract
A polyphase induction machine operated by an inverter drive system.  The machine is constructed with concentrated full span windings.  Twelve or more phases are used to sufficiently cover the airgap region, in contrast to the conventional three phases using distributed and chorded windings.  Substantial efficiency and starting torque benefits are thereby obtained.
